                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                     remove comp.sys.next.announce

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated
newsgroup comp.sys.next.announce.

RATIONALE: remove comp.sys.next.announce

The last approved message was in January 2000. NeXT sold their
hardware business in 1993, and were acquired by Apple in 1996. Any
announcements about legacy hardware and software may be made in the
unmoderated groups of the comp.sys.next.* hierarchy.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup comp.sys.next.announce was created in July 1991 as part
of the reoranization of the comp.sys.next.* (CSN) hierarchy that
included creation of CSN.announce, CSN.sysadmin, CSN.programmer, and
CSN.misc (a rename of comp.sys.next). CSN.advocacy, CSN.bugs,
CSN.hardware, CSN.marketplace, and CSN.software were created in
subsequent reorganizations.

Traffic peaked at a high of around 3 articles per day in 1993 and
1994, and gradually declined to slightly less one per day by 1999. The
last approvals were in January 2000.

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

|comp.sys.next.announce	Announcements related to the NeXT computer system.

The charter (extracted from the CFV):

This group is for NeXT computer related announcements. This includes,
but is not limited to user group meeting announcements, new products
relating specifically to the NeXT machine, and other information
announcements (such as the FAQ).

PROCEDURE:
