                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                     remove rec.aviation.questions

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated
newsgroup rec.aviation.questions.

RATIONALE: remove rec.aviation.questions

The last approved message was in June 1994. The group was created in
April 1994, and had less than 30 articles posted in its 3-month period
of activity. It has been inactive the past 13 years.

Over the next few years, there were occasional comments by a poster
that they had attempted to post to rec.aviation.questions, but their
question had not appeared.

The original moderation scheme called for persons to submit their
question to rec.aviation.questions. After a question was received, it
would be directed to an "answer-maven", who would prepare an answer to
the question, possibly after additional research.

The answer-maven would cross-post his answer to rec.aviation.questions
and other relevant rec.aviation.* groups, with the original question
quoted within the body of the answer message. Follow-on discussion
could then occur in the unmoderated groups.

If a new moderator were assigned, the moderation scheme might be
modified such that legitimate questions would be be posted directly to
rec.aviation.questions with any persons interested in answering
responding directly in the group. Moderation could concentrate on
keeping any ensuing discussion focused on the original questions.

While the group could plausibly be converted to an unmoderated status,
it might simply serve as an additional group in a cross-post.

Note: There are also proposals to remove rec.aviation.answers and
rec.aviation.announce. Each proposal will be considered
independently.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup rec.aviation.questions was created in April 1994, and
had 11 approved articles in April, 12 articles in May, and 5 articles
in June. It has been idle for the past 13 years.

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

rec.aviation.questions	Aviation questions and answers.

The charter (from the CFV):

The charter of rec.aviation.questions is to receive questions on
aviation which might be answered in an simple and reasonably
authoritative manner by one or a few of the many knowledgeable
individuals we have on the net. Such questions, along with their
answers, will be posted as a single article, to rec.aviation.questions
and will be cross-posted to the appropriate unmoderated rec.aviation
subgroup(s). This process will avoid having such questions answered
many, many times by well-intentioned readers, sometimes correctly and
sometimes incorrectly. Interested netters will be able to follow up
to the original question and answer posting in the normal manner;
these follow-ups will be directed to the appropriate unmoderated
rec.aviation subgroup(s).

PROCEDURE:

The full group removal procedure is documented here:

All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups.proposals.

If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion
may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that
