                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                   remove misc.news.internet.announce

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated
newsgroup misc.news.internet.announce.

PROCEDURE:

The B8MB plans to begin voting on this proposal after five days. Please
offer any final discussion or comments before the end of this waiting
period. Voting may take up to one week (7 days); a result will be posted
following the end of the voting period.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.proposals.

The full group removal procedure is documented here:

SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION:

No comments were received.

RATIONALE: remove misc.news.internet.announce

The newsgroup has not had any approvals since September 1997. The
group was active for less than 2 years (November 1995 to September
1997). There were roughly 80% fewer approvals in the last 12 months
than in the first 12 months.

It is unlikely that a revival as a moderated group could fulfill its
charter as a source of information for the conventional media about
the Internet.

The removal of misc.news.internet.announce would have NO effect on
misc.news.internet.discuss.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup misc.news.internet.announce was created in November
1995, along with the companion group misc.news.internet.discuss.

A proposal to create a moderated misc.news.internet.media-stories and
to convert misc.news.internet.discuss to a moderated status failed in
June 1996 with less than 100 Yes votes each.

DISTRIBUTION:

This document has been posted to the following newsgroups:

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

misc.news.internet.announce	News bulletins from the Internet.

The charter (in part) extracted from the CFV:

Thus, misc.news.internet.announce is a way for the users of the
Internet to bring their own news to the media. This newsgroup will
serve as a place for members of Usenet to post Internet-related news
stories, press releases, announcements of events taking place on the
Internet, and reports of events happening in "the real world" that
have an effect on the Internet.
