                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                  remove comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d+wanted

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the unmoderated
newsgroups comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d and comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted.

PROCEDURE:

The B8MB plans to begin voting on this proposal after five days. Please
offer any final discussion or comments before the end of this waiting
period. Voting may take up to one week (7 days); a result will be posted
following the end of the voting period.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

The full group removal procedure is documented here:

SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION:

One comment was received from Timo Salmi, moderator of
comp.archives.msdos.announce, and comp.archives.ms-windows.announce,
clarifying that comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted had a broader usage than
solely as an adjunct to comp.binaries.ibm.pc (which is also proposed
for removal).

Nonetheless, he felt the generic goal of removing the entirety of the
comp.binaries.* sub-hierarchy (except comp.binaries.cbm) and the fact
that comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted was practically dormant, that the
removal of the two unmoderated discussion groups was justified.

RATIONALE: remove comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d+wanted

This is a companion proposal to that which would remove the moderated
group comp.binaries.ibm.pc. The groups comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d and
comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted exist solely to discuss binaries posted to
comp.binaries.ibm.pc, or to request (re)posting of binaries to
comp.binaries.ibm.pc.

If comp.binaries.ibm.pc is removed, these groups would be totally
superfluous. Note that there have been no messages approved to
comp.binaries.ibm.pc since February 1996.

Discussion of MS-DOS binaries in general (those not distributed via
comp.binaries.ibm.pc) are more properly discussed in
comp.archives.msdos.d.

This proposal is one of several that will removal all groups in the
comp.binaries.* hierarchy except comp.binaries.cbm.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d was created in April 1988.

In June 1991, comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d was split into
comp.binaries.ibm.pc, comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted, and
comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives.

In January 1993, comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives was renamed to
comp.archives.msdos.d, removing the discussion of binaries not
distributed via comp.binaries.ibm.pc from the comp.binaries.ibm.pc
sub-hierarchy.

DISTRIBUTION:

This document has been posted to the following newsgroups:

  news.announce.newgroups
  news.groups
  comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d
  comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted
  comp.archives.msdos.d

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d	Discussions about IBM/PC binary postings.

The charter (derived from the Results posting for
comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted) is:

The existing comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d would be used for discussions
about the actual programs posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc, such as bug
reports (but not articles about missing parts) or requests about how
to use the programs.
