                                 RESULT
             comp.networks.noctools-remove will be removed

The Last Call for Comments (LCC) on 11 Aug 2006 initiated a five-day period
for final comments. Following the comment period, the Big-8 Management Board
has decided by consensus to remove the comp.networks.noctools.* hierarchy.

These groups will be removed on 21 Aug 2006.

RATIONALE: remove comp.networks.noctools-remove

This sub-hierarchy is associated with a catalog of noctools sponsored by the
IETF, and at one time maintained at Washington University in St. Louis:

   ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu/doc/noctools

The catalog is no longer maintained (and I could not find it on the
Washington University ftp site).

comp.networks.noctools.announce has not had any approved messages since
August 1995.

comp.networks.noctools.tools has not had any approved messages since
September 1994.

The unmoderated groups comp.networks.noctools.{bugs|d|submissions|wanted}
have not had any messages related to the catalog of noctools sponsored by
the IETF, and at one time maintained at Washington University in St. Louis:

Some of the unmoderated groups have rare posts that may be appropriate
for comp.dcom.* groups such as comp.dcom.net-management.

Note that the removal of the comp.networks.noctools.* sub-hierarchy will have
the effect of eliminating the comp.networks.* sub-hierarchy, since it has no
other groups (and no other such groups have ever existed).

This RFD is part of a proposal to remove 31 low-traffic former-INET
groups. Please see article <1152814343.19576@isc.org>, available here:

    http://news.killfile.org/?group=news.announce.newgroups&number=1363

Note: the proposal to remove two of the 31 groups, comp.os.rsts and
comp.std.announce, has been withdrawn.

HISTORY:

The 6 groups in the comp.networks.noctools.* sub-hierarchy were created in
November 1992. They were promoted to the standard Big 8 distribution in
October 2000.
