I'll start this update on the workings of the B8MB by noting that
we're going to shut down for the holiday weekend.  Don't expect too much
response from us between tomorrow (5/26) and Monday (5/29).  I hope you
all enjoy your breaks, too.

It's about time for me to give a run-down of what's been going on
Volunteer Committees
on the Board list lately.  So here we go:
--------------------

There have been lots of discussions going on lately on news.groups
that have referenced three major volunteer organizations: the Usenet
Volunteer Pollsters, the Usenet Volunteer Moderators, and Group Mentors.
These groups are not currently populated, but they have fairly clear (if
general) goals.  And most importantly, they now have mailing lists, so
it's possible to start getting them organized.

Proposal Status
If you would like to volunteer for any of these organizations, please
---------------
subscribe to the relevant mailing lists.  We are not restricting
  membership at this point.

At the present time we are accepting proposals for new groups, with the
   Usenet Volunteer Pollsters
understanding that the creation process may be revised as a result of
   ==========================
what we learn by discussing the proposals.  We regret any frustration
that this may cause proponents and ask them to please bear with us as we
shake the bugs out of the new system.

If anybody has any comments on the queue status message I posted a

stone so far, and any feedback we get would be greatly appreciated.

We have moved our mailing list to board@big-8.org. If you need to

I plan to eventually post a queue report weekly.

Advisory Council
                    - Tim Skirvin (skirv@killfile.org)
----------------

As many of you know, there has been an intense discussion in news.groups
(and elsewhere) regarding the creation of an advisory council of
proponents, moderators, and others.  If created, this council might be
empowered to elect the people to the B8MB or to veto Board decisions.
The details, including the group name and powers, are still up in the
  air.

The Board is observing and participating in these discussions, as well
as discussing the topic among ourselves.  When the discussion has run
its course and we've had some time to consider the issue, we will decide
whether to proceed with the establishment of such a council.  If we
decide to proceed, we will post a proposal for the structure and duties
of the council and ask for additional feedback.

In the meantime, we will continue to accept and handle proposals under
the process we've previously announced.  We do not think anything would
be gained from delaying the work of the board while awaiting a decision
  about the Council.
