REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)

unmoderated group comp.mobile.ipad



This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) for the creation of the

unmoderated newsgroup comp.mobile.ipad.



NEWSGROUPS LINE:

comp.mobile.ipad		Mobile tablet PC running iPhone OS.



RATIONALE:



This newsgroup is meant to form a new group for the discussion and

mutual support of the Apple iPad mobile device.  Currently, discussion

of the iPad has been spread among a number of newsgroups including, but

not limited to, comp.sys.mac.comm, comp.sys.mac.system, and

misc.phone.mobile.iphone.  Having a newsgroup designated for the iPad

will help alleviate the fragmentation that currently exists.



Discussions preliminary and subsequent to the first iteration of this

RFD concentrated mainly on the name and hierarchy for such a newsgroup;

there was little objection voiced against the formation of such a group.



"From Jan 27 (the date Apple announced the iPad) to March 9, 2010 (the

date of the first floater for this proposed newsgroup), an analysis of

comp.sys.mac.comm, comp.sys.mac.system, and misc.phone.mobile.iphone

showed that 2177 (or 32%) of the 6724 posts in those three groups

referenced the iPad.  Excluding comp.sys.mac.system (the one least

relevant to the iPad), the percentage increases to 46.75%" (Jim

This proposal would entail a hierarchy, namely, comp.mobile*.  There is

precedent for a comp.mobile.* hierarchy, as evidenced by the existence

of fj.comp.mobile and japan.comp.mobile.  Comp.mobile.* paves the way

for the addition of newsgroups for future and existing mobile devices by

Apple and other manufacturers.



CHARTER:



comp.mobile.ipad is an unmoderated group for the users of Apple's iPad.

Discussions about any issue relating to the iPad, including but not

limited to, installation problems, configuration problems, or

discussions on different applications available for the iPad are

welcome.



Posters are expected to abide by normal Usenet standards of decorum, and

to ignore articles intended to disrupt the group.  The usual suspects

are prohibited (spam, binaries, direct advertising, etc.)

The final comment period lasts for five (5) days from the

time that this RFD is posted.
