A web-to-news gateway is a website that allows access to Usenet newsgroups through a web-based user interface. Some allow users to post messages, while others act only as read-only archives.

Last activity in 2009
If there is need for discussion, more general groups can be used.

DISCUSSION SO FAR:

Discussion took place primarily in news.groups.proposals with some
further posts in news.groups. Responses were received in the threads
"RFD: Remove comp.unix.bsd.386bsd.misc and comp.unix.bsd.bsdi.misc" (in
news.groups.proposals) and "RFD: Remove comp.unix.user-friendly" (in
news.groups.proposals and news.groups). No responses were received in
the thread "RFD: Remove comp.unix.sys5.misc and comp.unix.sys5.r4".
However, all of the points raised could be applicable to any of the five
newsgroups currently under consideration, and therefore we have collated
all of the responses into a single summary covering all five groups.

Computer Nerd Kev argues that it is better to have separate newsgroups
to discuss old platforms, as some users in the more general groups may
not welcome discussions of old unmaintained software.

Julien ÉLIE supports the proposals but suggests that a mass deletion of
unused groups would be more efficient than removing groups a few at a
time.

Jesse Rehmer and ReK2 Hispagatos believe that a long list of newsgroups
where many have had no traffic for years is discouraging for new users
and makes it hard to find relevant groups.

Computer Nerd Kev and Winston both note that they personally subscribe
to groups with no traffic, and therefore lack of activity is not
necessarily an indication that nobody has any interest in the group.

noel, sticks, yeti, and DrunkenThon all expressed concern that removing
the groups would also remove valuable historical discussions associated
with those groups. Scott Dorsey countered that news service providers
typically do not guarantee that old posts will remain available
indefinitely in any case, and an archive server should not remove old
posts if the group no longer exists. Todd McComb suggested that it would
be more productive for anyone concerned about the availability of
historical posts to direct their efforts at improving the state of
Usenet archiving.

Adam Kerman and Steve Bonine both consider the proposed changes a "make-
work" activity that achieves nothing useful.

comp.unix.user-friendly
Discussion of UNIX user-friendliness

Charter:
UNIX has a reputation of being unfriendly for non-programmers - making
it difficult to use by those who need not know Unix, such as the
average user in the commercial business world. This group would be a
forum for discussion about UNIX user-friendliness and the availability
of user-friendly software for UNIX.

Presently, the above is done on an ad-hoc basis on a number of groups
such as comp.editors, comp.unix.questions, etc. Posts presently
asking about user-friendly utilities/software for UNIX usually attract
some flamage and seem out of place in these groups, because of
non-obvious differences between friendliness of Unix towards
programmers and unfriendliness towards non-programmers. This group
would give non-programming users a forum where their type of
"user-friendliness" is meant to be the norm, not the exception.

The following would be considered typical for this group:-

- To clarify definitions like "user-friendliness" for the relevant
groups of users.
- Discussion about what user friendly software (editors, utilites,
etc) are available for UNIX.
- Discussion/opinions about ways of making "default" UNIX user setups
more user-friendly.
- Announcements of new "user-friendly" software and utilities.
- Discussion on how UNIX and UNIX software could be made more friendly
without endangering the work methods of the Unix programmers who feel
Unix *is* already friendly for them.
- Discussion on what makes a particular part of UNIX or UNIX software
so unfriendly/friendly, and for which subgroup of users.

History:
comp.unix.user-friendly is an unmoderated newsgroup which passed its
vote for creation by 280:87 as reported in news.announce.newgroups on
27 Sep 1993.

CHARTER AND MODERATION POLICY FOR REC.PHOTO.MODERATED:

Articles must be relevant to the art or science of photography and of
interest to serious amateur recreational photographers, must be in
reasonably good taste, and must conform to Usenet guidelines.
Suitable topics include: the technical aspects of photographic
equipment, technique, optics, film, photographic philosophy, ethics and
conduct, photography as fine art, and brief reviews of new products
and announcements of events. Other topics may be accepted at the
moderators' discretion, with the main criterion being interest to
serious amateur recreation photographers.

Articles about topics usually associated with commercial/professional
photography may be accepted on a limited basis as long as they are
relevant to serious amateur recreational photographers. Thus, for

The comp.simulation group is about generic issues in simulation modelling
and analysis. That includes the following: simulation methods, simulation
tools and software, simulation practice, simulation case studies and
anything else on simulation subject.
This group is not about simulation topics covered in other simulation news
groups such as: rec.autos.simulators, rec.aviation.simulatiors or
sci.aeronautics.simulation.

Moderation policy
=================

1. Postings must be in plain text.
2. Binary postings will not be accepted.
3. Recommended line length is 80 characters, but anything up to 160 will
be accepted.
4. Excessive quoting and large sigs are also not allowed. Any post with
more than 70% quoted material or a sig in excess of 512 bytes will be
rejected.

POSTING GUIDELINES FOR COMP.NEWPROD:

[No charter is on file with the ISC for comp.newprod; the following
guidelines are taken from the periodic posting "Comp.Newprod submission
guidelines", posted monthly until 2018-07-15]

1. The submission must be an announcement of a new product or
service. The product must be computer-related, and it must be of
potential interest to a large number of Usenet readers. The
message must be of lasting value, thus we do not accept trade show
announcements, special pricing offers, etc. Commercial messages
other than new product announcements are not appropriate for this
newsgroup.

2. Announcements should *briefly* describe the product, requirements
(e.g. supported platforms), availability, and pricing. It should
only take a couple of screenfuls to convey this information. If
your description is longer than that, then you've either got too
much detail or too much fluff. All you should do here is summarize.
Anybody who is interested will contact you for the additional
information. Similarly, do not include lengthy product matrices
or order forms; ask interested people to write to you for a copy.
The ideal length is on the order of 60 lines (excluding headers).
If your message is much longer, it needs tighter editing. (Please
note, excessive length is the most common reason for rejecting
submissions.)

3. The announcement must be informative. It must contain a brief
technical description of the product or service, subject to the
length constraints just mentioned. This newsgroup is NOT a place
for advertisements! It is a place for factual product info.

4. The product must be available to all Usenet users throughout
North America, if not the world. Products with regional availability
should be announced in regional newsgroups, not comp.newprod.

5. All announcements must contain the manufacturer's name and a
contact for additional information. This should include a name,
telephone number, postal address, and email address. Americans,
please remember that your 1-800 telephone number might not work
for people outside the U.S.

6. The announcement must be from a representative either employed
by or designated by the product's manufacturer. We do not accept
announcements from distributors or resellers for products in mass
distribution.

7. Leave out the quotations from your company executives and ecstatic
customers. If there is useful info in that quote, it may be
provided more concisely and compellingly as a statement of fact.
Moreover, we don't need to know about your corporate history,
customer list, or distribution methods. Please avoid the superlatives
and superfluous hype. Just the (technical) facts, please. These
violations are the second most common reason (after message length)
for returning submissions.

8. Note that a typical press release does NOT meet the above
guidelines. They tend to be either too long or too heavy on the
hype. We aren't the press. We don't want to edit (or spindle or
fold or mutilate) your announcements as the press might. We simply
want to publish them. You need to do the editing.

9. Your article must have a suitable Subject, not something like
`submission for comp.newprod'. Do not use all UPPER CASE or
superfluous !!!punctuation marks!!! in your subject (or messages).
Putting phrases like `new product announcement' in your subject
is dumb. If it wasn't it wouldn't be in this newsgroup! Select
your subject with care; a person is going to decide whether or
not to read your announcement based upon those six short words.

10. We almost never accept articles that are cross-posted to multiple
newsgroups or have been posted to other newsgroups. By definition,
if a message is appropriate for comp.newprod then it is NOT
appropriate for most other Usenet groups. One exception: some
`announce' groups accept product announcements, and we will cross-post
there if its moderator says OK.

11. We do not accept articles with a limited `Distribution'. If you
have availability restrictions then do mention them in the
announcement, but the announcement must be submitted for distribution
throughout all of Usenet.

12. If the contact person for additional information is not the person
who submitted the message, then put a `Reply-To' header in the
message. Do NOT try to redirect email to somebody else by saying
`send email to ...' in your announcement. People won't. They
will just hit the `r' key and the message will go back to you.
If you do not know how to set a `Reply-To', ask for help.

13. We use a standard keywording system for all comp.newprod messages.
We require a `Keywords' header on your message. The format is
`Keywords: company name; product name; keyword, keyword, keyword ...'.
We welcome (plead for!) your suggestions on keywords. If the
product is esoteric or outside our areas of expertise, we might end
up picking crummy keywords.

14. Your message must be properly formatted, avoiding long lines
that wrap around a typical terminal screen and strange line breaks.
We suggest that you break your lines at 78 columns or less.
Whitespace is your friend (within reason). Carefully spell check
and proofread your submissions; nothing screams `unprofessional'
louder than poorly crafted prose. Please go easy on the Cap-Shift
key. Do NOT right-justify your text; leave `ragged right margins.'
We are not impressed that you can construct your company logo out
of Xs and /s. `ASCII art' and gratuitous typesetting effects are
discouraged. A double pox on people who use overly long signatures.

15. If you fear the headers of your message might get mangled in
transit, feel free to note correct header information at the very
top of your message. Clarifying comments addressed to the moderator
also may be placed at the top of your message. If, while you are
at it, you'd like to suggest some keywords for your message, that
would be great. We will cleanup the headers and remove these
comments prior to posting.

to service after a considerable hiatus.

The previous moderator, Kathy Morgan, lost access to the group's
moderation address when the server at albasani.net suffered a failure
in early 2020, and the group has been dormant since then. In email
communication with the Board, Kathy later expressed a wish to retire
from moderation duties.

A call for new moderators was posted in news.groups in April 2022

the ensuing discussion did not result in any volunteers.

The Board has therefore volunteered to moderate news.newusers.questions,
along with its companion group news.announce.newusers. While the
Board's core responsibility is to maintain the roster of groups in the
Big 8 hierarchies, it is also in keeping with the ethos of the Board to
promote and support the Big 8 and Usenet in general. As such, the Board
considers it worthwhile to ensure that these newsgroups and their FAQs
remain available for the benefit of newcomers to Usenet.

NEWS.NEWUSERS.QUESTIONS (n.n.q) is for questions, answers and advice
about using Usenet news and other Internet newsgroups and services.
Articles which do not contribute to educating or informing new users
about Usenet are inappropriate for this newsgroup.

The newsgroup will be moderated by a Moderation Board, consisting of
a Head Moderator and a pool of Backup Moderators. The moderation
process will be overseen by the Head Moderator, who may employ
assistants from the pool of Backup Moderators as the need arises.
Only members of the Moderation Board have the power to judge posts.

The current moderation procedures and policies will be described in
an Administrative Statement, which will be maintained by the Head
Moderator, with any changes subject to veto by the Board. The
Statement will be posted to the group whenever it changes, and at
least once per month. It will be available at all times at an address
posted regularly in the group.

All posts to the group may be processed through moderation software
which will take one of the following actions on each article:

1. Reject it outright if it meets certain criteria;

2. Forward it to a Board member if it meets certain other
criteria; or

3. Post it immediately.

The criteria being used by either the moderation software or human
moderators will be described in the Administrative Statement. They
will not refer to the source of the articles except that the Head
Moderator may place certain individuals or sites which repeatedly try
to post off-topic material on a "watch list," which will cause their
articles to be forwarded to a human moderator for review. The Head
Moderator may also declare certain off-topic discussion threads to be
"closed," so that no more articles in that thread will be accepted.

Rejected articles will, if possible, be returned to the sender along
with a letter of explanation. Rejected articles may be appealed to an
address specified in the Administrative Statement and in any letter of
rejection. If an article was rejected by a human moderator, the
appeal will be judged by a different moderator. In the event of abuse
of the appeals process, the Moderation Board will decide what action
will be taken to deal with the abuse.

An article will normally be subject to rejection only at the time it
is submitted. Canceling of articles after they have been posted
("retromoderation") will not be used for general content control.
Cancelations will be permitted only under the following special
circumstances:

1. When performed or requested by the original poster or by his/
her Internet Service Provider;

2. When performed by the Head Moderator, to cancel articles with
forged approvals; or

3. When performed by reputable third-party cancelers (as
determined by the Head Moderator), to cancel articles that are
widely considered to be undesirable in most of Usenet, e.g.
binaries and excessively multiposted articles ("spam").

In addition to rejecting inappropriate articles, the moderators may
take measures to discourage users from submitting such articles in the
first place, including:

1. Appending short "footers" to all posted articles, informing
newcomers of the purpose of the newsgroup and providing
references to more detailed information about the newsgroup,
the Usenet community, and the Internet in general; and

2. E-mailing "welcome" messages to all first-time posters,
containing similar information as in (1).

Other than appending a footer or adding headers, the moderators will
not modify the content of a posted article

The Head Moderator will submit a report to the Moderation Board each
month, providing statistics on the functioning of the group, a
summary of the articles appealed, and a list of any changes to the
Administrative Statement or the moderation software. The Board may
instruct the Head Moderator to eliminate any automatic rejection or
forwarding criterion from the moderation software.

The Board may elect a new Head Moderator if the position becomes
vacant; the Head Moderator or the Board may appoint a Backup Moderator
to fill in for the Head Moderator during short periods of absence.

The Board also has the power to remove a Head Moderator. It may
remove a Head Moderator who has been in office for less than six weeks
through a simple majority vote of all members. A Moderator who has
been in office for more than six weeks may only be removed by a 2/3
majority vote of those who have been on the Board for at least six
weeks.

The Board controls its own membership. It may admit new members with
a simple majority vote, or remove members who have served for less
than six weeks with a simple majority vote. Members who have served
longer than six weeks may only be removed by a 2/3 vote of those who
have been on the Board for at least six weeks. The Board will make a
good-faith effort to maintain a membership of at least three persons.

The working charter for the group may be modified by a 2/3 vote of
those who have been members of the Moderation Board for at least six
weeks. A copy of the current charter will be available at a location
given in the Administrative Statement.

== Introduction ==

The newsgroup {{news|news.newusers.questions}} is for questions and answers about Usenet and the Internet. Newcomers to newsgroups and the Internet in general can ask questions and will, we hope, receive useful replies.

The group is moderated. This means that a human moderator or a moderation program reviews every article before placing it in the group. For you, if you post a question or answer to news.newusers.questions, this means that there will be a delay before you will see your post. Your news server will email the article to our moderation site, where we will post it to the newsgroup. Then, your article must propagate back to your news server by way of Usenet news feeds. The entire process may take from minutes to hours.
