I wrote my first line of software in the early 1960s while still a student at UCLA. I found computers to be so interesting that I made a career of software development and testing.

Beyond merely participating in various newsgroups, my first involvement with Big8-Usenet was in 1998, when I was a principal proponent in a successful RFD to split rec.collecting.stamps into rec.collecting.stamps.discuss and rec.collecting.stamps.marketplace. This was during the era when the general Internet public voted on Big8 RFDs, and I had to defend myself against attacks from commercial interests that wanted to continue spamming a newsgroup intended for hobbyists who collected stamps.

After a [http://www.rossde.com/retired.html career of more than 40 years creating and testing computer software], I retired in 2003. In the meantime, I had headed a small [http://www.oakparkfoundation.org/ charitable foundation] for some 17 years, an unpaid volunteer position from which I retired in 2007. I then sought venues for other volunteer service.

One venue was Big8-Usenet, where I volunteered to create a list of Internet [[RFCs]] affecting newsgroups for the Wiki. RFCs are "requests for comments", some of which lead to Internet standards. When an opening on the Big8 Management Board then arose in 2009, I then volunteered for election. I have served on the Board since then.

I have always been active [http://www.rossde.com/index.html#community_service volunteering], and I remain so in venues other than the Big8 Management Board.

The following tabulation lists all current (not obsolete) RFCs that have Usenet or NNTP in their titles along with selected RFCs to which they refer and some other RFCs of general Internet impact. Some (e.g., [http://www.dtcc.edu/cs/rfc1855.html RFC1855]) may be of interest to general newsgroup participants. Others (e.g., [http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2046 RFC2046]) are of a technical nature that might be of interest only to developers of news servers and clients.

The RFC number in the first column is a link to its online document.

The term RFC means "request for comment". Technically, an RFC is thus not a standard. In many cases, however, an RFC is as close to a standard as we can get. On the other hand, some RFCs have indeed been elevated to official standards. Those are indicated with their numbers in '''bold''' and the number of the standard in parentheses with STD.

The "Date" column is the date (month and year) the RFC was published for comments.

Under "Impacts On and From Other RFCs", obsolete RFCs are in <s>strike-out</s>. Links are provided for non-obsolete RFCs that update the subject RFC.

The following tabulation lists all current (not obsolete) RFCs that have Usenet or NNTP in their titles along with selected RFCs to which they refer and some other RFCs of general Internet impact. Some (e.g., [http://www.dtcc.edu/cs/rfc1855.html RFC1855]) may be of interest to general newsgroup participants. Others (e.g., [http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1036 RFC1036]) are of a technical nature that might be of interest only to developers of news servers and clients.

The RFC number in the first column is a link to its online document.

The term RFC means "request for comment". Technically, an RFC is thus not a standard. In many cases, however, an RFC is as close to a standard as we can get. On the other hand, some RFCs have indeed been elevated to official standards. Those are indicated with their numbers in '''bold''' and the number of the standard in parentheses with STD.

The "Date" column is the date (month and year) the RFC was published for comments.

Under "Impacts On and From Other RFCs", obsolete RFCs are in <s>strike-out</s>. Links are provided for non-obsolete RFCs that update the subject RFC.
